Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE) is the process of reviewing and improving machine-generated translations to meet quality standards. As AI translation quality has improved, MTPE has grown from a niche service to one of the most requested translation services, accounting for an increasing share of professional translators' workloads.

The two main levels of MTPE serve different purposes. Light post-editing focuses on correctness: ensuring no factual errors, mistranslations, or critical grammar issues. The goal is 'good enough' quality suitable for internal communication, gisting, or low-visibility content. Full post-editing aims for publication-ready quality comparable to human translation, addressing style, terminology consistency, fluency, and brand voice alignment. Full post-editing takes 2-3 times longer than light post-editing but 40-60% less time than translating from scratch.

Effective post-editing requires understanding common AI translation error patterns: false cognates, dropped context across sentences, inconsistent terminology, overly literal phrasings, and hallucinated content.
