Translation quality assurance (QA) is a systematic process for verifying that translated content meets defined quality standards. A robust QA process is what distinguishes professional translation services from casual AI translation and is essential for content where accuracy and consistency matter.
Automated QA features in CAT tools check for common issues: inconsistent terminology, missing translations, number mismatches, formatting errors, tag issues (critical for HTML, XML, and software localization), and length limitations. Trados and MemoQ have comprehensive built-in QA checkers that can be customized with project-specific rules. For specialized content, additional automated checks may include: regulatory term verification (medical, legal), brand name consistency, and compliance with style guides.
Human QA follows automated checks and includes: fresh review by a second linguist (the four-eye principle), subject matter expert review for specialized content, formatting and layout verification in the final format, and client review for brand and content accuracy. The most rigorous QA processes use a tiered approach: automated checks catch mechanical errors, linguistic review catches fluency and style issues, subject matter review catches accuracy errors, and client review catches brand and content alignment issues. Each tier catches issues that lower tiers cannot.
