Translation Security: How to Keep Your Data Safe

When you use online translation tools, your text is sent to remote servers for processing. For sensitive content including legal documents, medical records, trade secrets, or personal communications, this raises important security and privacy questions that organizations must address.

The security measures of major translation services vary considerably. Most cloud services encrypt data in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256). DeepL offers GDPR-compliant automatic deletion of translated content after processing and does not use customer translations for model training. Google Translate and Microsoft Translator process data according to their respective cloud privacy policies, with enterprise tiers offering enhanced data protection. For the highest security, on-premise solutions like Lingvanex provide complete data control with no data ever leaving your infrastructure.

Key security considerations: review each provider's data processing agreement for compliance with your regulatory requirements, understand whether translated content is used for model training, use enterprise tiers for business-critical content, implement data classification policies that route sensitive content to higher-security tools, and consider on-premise translation for highly regulated industries. The right security approach balances translation quality requirements with data protection needs, recognizing that zero-risk solutions like on-premise deployment typically offer lower translation quality than cloud-based alternatives.
